Iquick  http://www.iquick.com Reputed to be quick and accurate and has a strict privacy protection policy.
Quintura  http://www.quintura.com Uses the new "tag cloud" approach. One way to get started with tag cloud searching is to try the Quintura for Kids tour on the site.
Yubnub   http://www.yubnub.org (Note: not a search engine exactly. Go to the site to learn more.) Allows thousands of different search commands.  Use with Google or whatever other search engine you want in order to focus your search better by inserting special commands.
Ask.com  http://www.ask.com Displays results in a clear and easy to use way.

A GREAT collection of databases, provided FREE to patrons of the Evangeline Parish Library by the State Library of Louisiana.  Discover resources for students and browsers of all ages.  Track your family tree with Ancestry.com (in library use only), use Chilton's car repair manuals, take online practice tests and access up-to-date study guides for many professional and academic tests through Learning Express, discover books you will love through NoveList, gain FREE access to high-quality articles from numerous magazines, and much more!  Ask at the desk or call 337-363-1369 if you need help.  After hours try 337-831-4281 until 11 p.m. (This is the library's cell phone, carried by the director, who will take calls whenever possible.)

Maternal and Child Health Library

Provided by Georgetown University.  An excellent resource.  Includes special Knowledge Path resources on Children and Adolescents with Special Health Care Needs, special Knowledge Path resources on Autism Spectrum Disorders, etc.  (see below)

LD Online

A leading website on learning disabilities, learning disorders, and learning differences.  The site is an educational service of public television station WETA in Washington, D.C., and it has just undergone a major transformation in honor of its 10th birthday. 
Knowledge Path: Autism Spectrum Disorders

Part of the excellent Georgetown University Maternal and Child Health Library.   Starts with definitions, then general resources, links to web sites on the subject: A-Z (over 40 sites), then special electronic publications, then items in print (all copyrighted 2004 to 2006, thus as current and up to date as possible). 

Council for Exceptional Children According to the website, "the voice and vision of special education."  This site contains helpful information and resources for educators as well as parents.

Elders and Families section of the Administration on Aging website.

Elders and Families has an Alzheimer's Resource Room, Elders Rights and Resources, For Caregivers, Services for Seniors, Nutrition, plus much more.  It  is designed to assist older persons and their families, helping them to quickly obtain information they need.

First Gov for Seniors

The government's web site and a very comprehensive place to begin a search. Has link sections for Consumer Protection, Education, Jobs and Volunteerism, Federal and State Agencies, Health and Housing, Laws and Regulations, Retirement and Money, Taxes, and Travel and Leisure (each with numerous web page links).

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Internet Resources on Aging

The site's introduction states "Browse or search AARP's database on Internet resources . . ., and link to more than 900 of the best sites for people age 50+."

NIHSeniorHealth.gov

Featuring health information for older adults from the National Institutes of Health.  This website was developed by the National Institute on Aging and the National Library of Medicine.  It is very user friendly, and you can adjust the setup to make the pages very easy on the eyes. 

Look at the top of the page for places where you can change the text size, make the background dark instead of white for more contrast, and turn on Speech so the text is read.

The Louisiana Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs

Serves as a focal point for Louisiana's senior citizens and administers a broad range of home and community based services through a network of 37 Area Agencies on Aging.  The Agency's goal is "to serve as an effective visible advocate of the elderly by ensuring appropriate services are provided by the aging network in Louisiana."

Local Links

Ville Platte, LA Parish seat for Evangeline Parish and home of the main library. Situated on U.S. 167 and LA 10 north of U.S. 190.  Ville Platte means "flat town" in French.  Population over 8,000 and home of the Smoked Meat Festival in June, Library Book and Culture Fest in September, and Louisiana Cotton Festival and Tournoi in October.  Gateway to Chicot State Park.

Another Ville Platte site.  Not the city's official web page listed earlier, but also very informative.
KVPI radio on the web (KVPI stands for "Keeping Ville Platte Informed").  This is a great way to listen to news, including news in French, and music from the "Swamp Pop Capital of the World."
Chicot State Park  Over 6400 acres of hills and water, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, hiking, horse trails and many other activities.
Louisiana State Arboretum  Includes more than 300 acres of natural growth, trails, rustic bridges, and the Caroline Dorman Lodge dedicated to the late naturalist, author, and artist.
Mamou.   The second largest town in Evangeline Parish, and home to a great traditional country Mardi Gras, plus the famous "Fred's Lounge," a center for Cajun music. Here's another Mamou site.
